AFL SportsReady Planning Days

On Sunday the 7th of August we closed our office and flew to Sydney for our National Annual Planning Days Conference.

The conference was a combination of a celebration of our company's achievements over the last twelve months and an opportunity to monitor where we are currently placed and how to improve our service.

Billy Williams was our guest speaker who delivered a most informative session on “Cross Culture Awareness”.

As a national company is was good to have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with our interstate colleauges.

Why is a Football game between two local teams called a derby?

Before the development of codes of rules for different kinds of football, in England football was an informal game.
Association football, rugby football and so on had very few rules with games played between groups of youths, usually in the street, resulting in much injury and damage to property. There were no restrictions on the number of players and often the whole village played. In many places it became the custom to play matches on Shrove Tuesday, before the beginning of Lent, and among the best known of such games were those which took place in Ashbourne and Derby. In Derby, the game was played between two teams representing the parishes of St Peter and St Paul, and this match gave rise to the term "local derby'. - Peter Handford

AFL SportsReady Cup

In a major coup for the AFL SportsReady Cup, the AFL has allowed the Grand Final of the competition to be played as a curtain raiser to the West Coast Eagles qualifying final at Subiaco Oval.

The two competing teams will be Kent Street Senior High School & Governor Stirling Senior High School who were the top two finishers at the “Super Six” semi final series held at McGillivray Oval in early August.

Kent St Coach, Dave Tomlin said “When the boys found out that the top two teams got to play a curtain raiser they were excited & motivated to do well. They are thrilled about going to Subi & with a few Eagles supporters amongst them more than happy to get a seat to the AFL game. We have a good spread of boys led by our Captain, Tyson McNeill who was a State Schoolboys representative this year. We will have a practice match against the Perth 15’s Development squad at EfTel Oval next week as our final preparation for the game” He closed by saying “The AFL SportsReady Football Cup has been a great addition to the Year 10 Football program”

Governor Stirling coach, Andrew Davini was equally positive “We are hoping for a good result, last year we played in the Belt Up Cup grand final at Subiaco Oval & went down to Sacred Heart College, So we are looking for a better result this year. Most of this year’s team played in last year’s grand final so Subi oval won’t hold any fears for them. We have a good mix of players with our Captain, Tony Notte down forward & a quality midfield with Corey Taylor, Richard Kennedy & Todd Banfield providing drive out of the middle. The AFL SportsReady Cup married in well with the football program we run here at Governor Stirling & we have been training 3 times a week in the lead up to the Grand Final”

AFL SportsReady wishes both teams the best of luck for the final!

The inaugural AFL SportsReady Football Cup for Year 10 high school students has been a great success with over 40 schools competing. AFL SportsReady in conjunction with School Sport WA & WA Football Development are hoping to continue the competition in 2006 with even more schools involved.
