What is the Sporting Trade Skills program?
'Trade Apprenticeships for Life After Sport – Sporting Trade Skills' is a joint initiative undertaken as a Project under the Group Training Australian Apprenticeships Targeted Initiatives Program, funded by the Australian Government and managed by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. AFL SportsReady Ltd and Group Training Australia providing flexible opportunities for Elite Athletes to develop employment skills and establish a successful career.
The project was launched by The Hon Andrew Robb, AO and Senator The Hon George Brandis, SC at the Olympic Swim Centre, Homebush, Sydney in November 2007. The aim is to provide industry with national consistency with producing quality apprentices entering into the traditional trade industry. AFL SportsReady’s purpose is to:
- Provide a structured career pathway for athletes beyond their playing career
- Assist in addressing the skill shortage in traditional trades
- Ensuring compliance with national group training standards
- Compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations
- Improving Occupational Health and Safety and meeting established standards

What is the Sporting Trade Skills program?
The Sporting Trade Skills program is a government funded joint initiative of AFLSportsReady Ltd, Group Training Australia and the Federal Government. The aim of the program is to prepare athletes for their career transition out of sport and to equip them with a recognised trade qualification to utilise in the business world. Many athletes from a wide range of sporting codes are currently undertaking their chosen trade through the program which is setting them up for life after sport.
An apprenticeship is a structured course of training combined with employment for people to gain a recognised trade qualification.
