Indigenous Employment Program Vision
To inspire extraordinary futures and empower young indigenous Australians by creating ongoing employment opportunities through traineeships.
Indigenous Employment program
AFL SportsReady is committed to the strategic planning of future growth of Indigenous traineeships. At the end of 2004, AFL SportsReady had 430 trainees nationally, of which 75 were Indigenous Australians. This accounts for 17% of AFL SportsReady employees, highlighting the high employment rate of Indigenous peoples when compared to national standards.
Whilst this figure is encouraging, it is a mere snapshot of what is possible for AFL SportsReady in establishing sustainable employment for Indigenous Australians. The sport and recreation industry is currently enjoying fantastic participation rates and as a result have necessitated the need for sound administration practices. With this in mind, AFL SportsReady is well placed to negotiate traineeships with suitable host employers that facilitate valuable on-the-job and off-the-job training for Indigenous trainees.
With substantial incentives offered through the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations (DEEWR), the AFL Finals Levy and government traineeship incentives, Indigenous traineeships are an economically responsible employment option for sporting organisations.
By facilitating specific Indigenous employment strategies, we are educating Host Employers in relation to the potential of Indigenous traineeships, as well as assisting in the empowerment of future Indigenous leaders that embodies a more educated and inclusive society.
Logo Rationale
The structure of the symbol defines the program’s message of progress, stability and direction.
The symbols represents Indigenous participants that does not lean to a particular gender, but rather an inclusive program for male and female.
The symbols are designed as a movement which represents the progress of the organization since its inception in 1995 and reflects the continued percentage of Indigenous trainees in this time. The linking of hands within the symbol signifies communication, strength and unity from the participants.
2005 Strategic Priorities and Commitments
1. To create an AFL SportsReady presence in traditional Indigenous areas across Australia.
2. To continue to offer support to existing partnerships between key stakeholders in Indigenous traineeships.
3. To create ongoing traineeship positions for young Indigenous Australians within key state government departments and sporting organisations.
4. To create additional resources that target potential host employers of Indigenous trainees.

How does AFL SportsReady fit with Indigenous Employment?
AFL SportsReadys National Indigenous Employment Program was established in 2002 with the funding support of federal government and the commitment of board, senior management and staff at AFL SportsReady. It has grown in its success, is a pivotal focus area for the company and remains a priority into the future.
In order to continue the success of the Indigenous Employment
Program, AFL SportsReady recognised the need to further develop a structure that supports the aspirations of our trainees in order to create sustainable outcomes. In 2007 Indigenous Mentor Consultants were appointed to work closely with Indigenous trainees to provide support in career and personal pathways planning, regular mentoring and relationship management of Host Employers. In addition a range of activities occur including:
• Indigenous trainee gatherings for support, information and advice.
