  • Barrawarn Program

    The Collingwood Football Club Foundation and AFL SportsReady have partnered in a program that is designed to increase Indigenous participation in employment and training with a strong community football and local government involvement.

    Collingwood Football Club and AFL SportsReady share a commitment to providing opportunities to enable improved sporting, leadership, education and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

    In order to stimulate change and to support Indigenous communities, the Collingwood Football Club Foundation together with AFL SportsReady has created the ‘Barrawarn’ program, a three year program aimed at providing young Indigenous people with education and employment opportunities in metropolitan and regional Victoria. Barrawarn is the Woi wurrung (the language of Wurundjeri people) word for ‘Magpie’.

    The Barrawarn program will create up to 15 new employment positions within regional Victoria and within the City of Yarra and Darebin communities,with the training to be housed at Victoria Park and the trainees fully supported by Indigenous mentors.

    AFL Sportsready

    AFL SportsReady has employed over 1,000 Indigenous trainees across Australia in its 17 year history and continues to strive to be the leader in creating change for Indigenous communities and families through education, training and employment. AFL SportsReady is a not for profit organisation that has delivered many programs but of most significance is its strong Indigenous Employment Program.

    School based Traineeships

    10 school based trainees will be fully supported by an Indigenous mentor through AFL SportsReady who will provide personal and career pathway support, access to attend trainee network meetings and regular contact and further support with their AFL SportsReady Field Officer. The trainee will work for a range of different organisations within the cities of Yarra and Darebin.

    Full-time Traineeships

    5 full time trainees will be placed within AFL Victoria’s regional development areas with the aim to increase football engagement amongst regional Indigenous communities, and with vision, structure and identified role models this program will have a positive impact in these areas.
    Regional areas identified include:
    • Shepparton
    • Morwell
    • Dandenong
    • Ballarat
    • Mildura
    The 5 trainees will work closely with the Regional Development Managers and Regional Manager and may be involved in the following programs:
    • Auskick
    • Football Clubs
    • Talent Identification
    • Welfare and Community Services
    • Administration
    • Management
    All trainees will be fully supported by AFL Victoria, AFL SportsReady and an Indigenous mentor who will provide personal and career pathway support.
